in 2015 my mum and i went on a trip to Kanawa island. to put it simply, it's a trip that i will never forget. 11 year old me didn't even realize there were so many shades of blue, or that worries could disappear so quickly. while there, i would sit with my mum on the pier as she took photos and we'd watch the sun set and rise. i would fiddle around with my camera, and everytime i see those snapshots it transports me back. afterwards, i would write a few poems, putting into words what i felt and saw. if i'm being completely honest, i was reluctant to post them here, and even considered rewriting them. but my mum made me realize that however hard i try, or however much i may have improved in my poetry, i will never be able recapture those magical moments.
Kanawa Island I
The chirping of crickets The movement of the sea The chugging of boats The twitter of birds The floating islands The leaping fish All equal, in Kanawa Island A single ripple drifts above the surface As the sun rises slowly to its position A million mountains rise up in a thousand shades of grey The colours come to life and the fish begin to stir The rooster wakes up And does his morning wake up call Everybody yawns And gives themselves a good old scratch The generator starts to whir And out of the kitchen comes the delicious smells Of food, glorious food…. You open your eyes and listen To the lapping of the waves You think of all the happy times you’ve had until now And eventually put one foot on the wood floor You wriggle your toes And get out of bed A new day waits And you really don’t want to miss it!
Kanawa Island II
The sun emerges from behind the sea. The rocky mountains come out from their hiding spots. Dull and brown. Different shades of grey. Towering above the smaller ones. They lift up their arms to tickle the sky.
Kanawa Island III
No sound except for the murmuring of the aquamarine sea. The sand, golden and white, closes in on feet. The clouds noiselessly drift across the sky blocking out their enemy, the sun. The trees hang their heads but look up once the sun is gone. The night sky falls and the stars take over the clouds
kanawa island......truely a paradise that you so vividly describe...i particularily like kanawa III, as i can ,iterally feel the silence and peace...
